Time and gravity take their toll on nearly all aspects of the human body, but nowhere is this more apparent than in the breasts. Starting in the early 20’s, connective tissue of the breast begins to lose strength and rigidity. Add in the stresses of exercise, pregnancy, breast-feeding, natural weight fluctuations plus genetics and it’s clear how the breasts are particularly vulnerable to sagging, loss of fullness and reduced skin elasticity.
The ideal candidates for a breast lift are women who desire a lift and improved symmetry of the breasts. Along with the lift, errant nipple position, enlarged areolas and breast shape discrepancies can also be corrected. In addition, the procedure may be combined with a breast augmentation in women wanting additional breast volume and cleavage.
What to expect during and after breast lift surgery
The first step is an in-depth consultation with us. After discussing your general goals and expectations, we will go over your options and give recommendations based on your breast size and shape, the degree of sagging, the position and size of areolas, and overall skin quality. In addition, the exact details of your procedure- such as the type of incisions (vertical/lollipop or inverted T/anchor)- will be discussed with you during the consult. If you’ve lost volume due to aging, weight loss, or pregnancy or have always wanted more fullness in your breasts, the lift may be combined with a breast augmentation procedure using implants or your own fat.
The breast lift surgery is performed on an outpatient basis under mild general anesthesia. The procedure typically takes about two and a half hours plus an additional hour in recovery before going home. A support garment will be worn to help minimize swelling and allow early activity. Following the lift, minor discomfort and soreness is standard, but basic activities may be resumed in as soon as 24 hours. If implants are placed, moderate soreness of chest muscles is standard and we recommend limiting all activities for 48 hours after surgery. Most patients can resume normal activities after one week, but the recommendation is to refrain from strenuous exercise for 4-6 weeks.
After a breast lift procedure, results are immediately visible with a more full and lifted appearance. Furthermore, the size and shape of the breast are improved for a more attractive and youthful look leading to a boost in self-image and self-confidence.
